Tips & Troubleshooting

Need help troubleshooting your pool issues?

Many common pool issues can be easily resolved using our tips below,
and every troubleshoot or setting is available in your product manuals above.

Bionizer

  1. Check you have the correct volume of the pool entered into the Bionizer as it may be set too high which will add more copper than is required for your sized pool. See page 13 of your Bionizer Handbook.
  2. Reduce the Bionizer output by 20% to 80% of the current setting until it reaches the right level ( 0.5 – 0.6 ppM). This may take several weeks depending on how high the copper level is.
  3. Use a metal remover or metal magnet to reduce the copper level on your pool water. Do not dose more than 30% of the recommended dose advised on the metal remover container. Too much metal remover will interfere with the copper ion production for several weeks after treatment.
  4. Suspending some aluminium metal strips in the pool below the waterline will attract any copper in the water and also serve to reduce the high copper level faster than waiting for excess copper in the water to drop to normal levels of its own accord.

If the copper is very high >1ppm it may be wise to drain some of the pool water then refill. After replacing the water that was removed rebalance the water to achieve balance levels again.

Be sure whatever the solution you apply that you maintain correct pH and Total Alkalinity levels.

Test regularly for copper, pH and Total Alkalinity levels (once per week) as the problem of the copper reaching high readings far above the 0.5 to 0.6 advised level is caused by not regularly testing for the level of copper in your pool.

  1. Use the boost function to increase copper levels, page 18 of your Bionizer Handbook
  2. Check Anodes for wear. The copper/silver mineral anodes are “sacrificial” and designed to slowly disintegrate, contributing mineral ions to the pool water. After an average of 18 – 36 months, (for 50,000 Litre pool), the anodes will wear away and require replacing.
  3. Increase Ionising Time or Ionising Output, page 14 of your Bionizer Handbook
  4. Check pH and Total Alkalinity levels are correct. pH level has to be within the correct range for an accurate copper reading. Low TA makes copper less effective, and the pool water can take on a green appearance.
  5. Check that the pump is working.
  6. If chlorine stabilizer has been used in the past, check that stabilizer level is below 80 ppM. The only way to reduce stabilizer level is by diluting. For example, draining half the pool and refilling with fresh water.
  7. Check to see that you have not used a flocculent that removes metals from the water. If you have done so, empty half the water from the pool / spa and refill – adjust the Bionizer to start-up levels and re-ionise the pool water to normal ion levels. Once normal levels are achieved return Bionizer to normal operating mode.
  8. Do the “Bucket Test” on page 24 of your Bionizer Handbook to check that the Ionising output of the Bionizer is operating correctly. If the pool water is low in copper, but the bucket test shows a high result, follow this procedure:
    1. Backwash the filter for 15 seconds or so and then stop.
    2. Then backwash the filter again for a second or two and capture a small amount of the backwash water. The sight glass on or near the filter is ideal for water sample collection.
    3. Test some of this water with the Bionizer Copper Test Kit. If the ion reading is high then the filter media is trapping ions.
    4. Backwash the filter and SLOWLY pour about 500 ml of Hydrochloric Acid into the skimmer box with the filter running.
    5. Wait for 15 minutes and test the copper in the pool again. If the copper reading is still very low then change the sand to Glass Medium for pool filters.

When the Bionizer has finished it’s ionizing for the day, the unit will show “Ions: Off”:

When the Bionizer is currently ionizing it will show “Ions: On”

Test Total Alkalinity – green clear water can be an indication that T/A is too low. There is no need to adjust the total alkalinity (T/A) unless it drops below 50 – 60. If raising the T/A try to keep it in between 80 – 100. Do not add too much buffer, as the higher buffer level will cause a higher pH, and increase your acid usage. The water may tinge clear green if the T/A gets too low for any period of time. The ionizer will not cause any corrosion if the T/A is low (under 60). The levels of water balance that we prescribe fall into the area that is neither corrosive nor scale forming.

At certain seasonal times of the year (spring/summer) the pool may tinge green or develop green residue on the bottom. This can be mistaken for algae but is often pollen. The easy test is: run your hand around inside the wall of skimmer box or pool surface under the waterline. If it is slippery or slimy it is likely to be algae. If not, then it is most likely pollen. If it is pollen, use polymer clarifier such as Focus Water Polish Plus. Do not use a clarifier or flocculent that removes metal ions from the water.

The red light flashes when water conductivity is low or anodes are worn from use.

  • If anodes worn from use, replace anodes.

Conductivity can be low due to :

  • Recent rains or
  • Pool water level being topped up.

To check conductivity adjust “Output %” setting down slowly. If red light goes out before zero output is reached conductivity of the water is low.

SOLUTION:

  1. If water conductivity is low, add one bag of pool salt per 50,000L to pool water and brush until dissolved.

The copper/silver anodes are “sacrificial” and designed to slowly disintegrate, contributing mineral ions to the pool water.

After an average of 18 – 30 months, (depending on respective conditions and pool size), the anodes will wear away and require replacing.

Replacement Indicator

This will be apparent when the ion readings start to drop for no apparent reason. The red light on the control box (Maximum Output) will light up and the message “Check Anodes” will appear on the display screen.

When this happens it is indicating that the anodes are wearing down.

Examining the Anodes

At this time it is important to check the anodes.

  1. The Anodes can simply be inspected for wear through the clear BioPod cartridge.
  2. If there is noticeably more wear on one end of the anodes, remove the cartridge, turn around, and re-fit.
  3. Don’t forget to have the filter turned off and the taps or valves closed to prevent water from spurting out when you remove the BioPod from the pipeline.

Purchase replacement anodes.

NOTE: When the anodes are worn it will not damage the Bionizer. This is also true if the pump fails or there is no water passing the anodes when the Bionizer is operating – no damage to the unit or pool equipment will result and there will be no risk of fire or explosion as can occur with many salt chlorinator electrodes if they are left running.

Adjusting Ionisation When Anodes are Worn

If they are becoming worn reduce the Ionising Output setting, see page 14 of your Bionizer Handbook, until the red light goes out.

Increase the length of ionising time that the unit operates to compensate.

Don’t forget to have the filter turned off and the taps / valves closed to prevent water from spurting out when you remove the old anodes.

  1. Unscrew the barrel union nuts on either side of the blue pod cartridge.
  2. Remove the old pod cartridge. Make sure that the O-rings fitted to the fittings that are glued to the pipe are correctly seated in place.
  3. Fit the new BioPod Cartridge. It can be fitted either way around.
  4. Screw the barrel union nuts back in place to a firm hand tightness. Do not use a tool, as it could damage the plastic threads.
  5. For optimum performance when mounting in a horizontal position, particularly in low flow conditions, ensure that the bolts are exiting on the sides as shown in the diagram below.

  6. Fit the ring connectors onto the bolts on each side of the BioPod and tighten the wing nuts securely. The rings can be fitted to either anode bolts. There is no + / – polarity for the connections.

How Often Should I Check?

We recommend checking your anodes for wear every six (6) months. It is always a good idea to have a spare set of anodes on hand.

Purchase replacement anodes here.

First, confirm it is in fact algae, see “Pool Water is Green” above.

Why does an algae attach occur?

  • Bionizer anodes need replacing
  • pH allowed to drift too high.
  • High phosphate level in the pool water.
  • High biological loading, such as large amounts of leaves in the pool and skimmer basket.
  • Insufficient water circulation.
  • Weather changed from mild to hot, and the Bionizer Ionising Time or Ionising Output was not sufficient to treat the pool.

How to treat the algae:

  1. First, the algae needs to be killed. The quickest and easiest way to do this, is to Super-chlorinate the pool. See Super-chlorination on page 30 of your Bionizer Handbook.
  2. Run the filter for 24 hours, to ensure that the Chlorine is circulated well throughout the pool and the filter.
  3. Hint : Since you are using a Bionizer and are not likely to have any Chlorine stabiliser in your pool, Superchlorination should be done in the early evening, so that the Chlorine stays in your pool overnight. This way, you won’t have Cyanuric acid left in your pool after the algae attack has been removed.
  4. Next, the dead and dying algae must be removed from your pool. Thoroughly brush down the sides and floor of the pool. Run the filter while doing this, so that the particles get trapped there.
  5. Check your filter’s pressure gauge often. When the pressure rises to 50kPa or more ABOVE THE USUAL RUNNING PRESSURE, it’s time to backwash (sand/glass filter), or clean the filter cartridge (cartridge filter).
  6. For a heavy algae attack, you may need to backwash or clean the filter several times.
  7. Once the water has cleared up, there are several problem areas that you need to check for further algae infestation :
    • If you have a pool blanket, wash down the underside of the blanket with liquid chlorine, as there will be algae spores attached there. An easy and safe way to do this, is to fit the blanket into the pool upside down, and use a bucket of chlorine, your pool brush and a garden hose to wash it down. This way, excess chlorine that spills off the blanket only ends up in your pool, not on your lawn or pool surround.
  • If possible, remove the “dress ring” that surrounds your pool light and check behind there. This is a favourite place for algae to hide.
  • In and around the skimmer box also needs to be cleaned well.
  • Any other nooks and hiding places, such as the underside of decorative rocks and so forth.

Following these simple steps will have your pool sparkling and clean again within 1 or 2 days, depending on the severity of the algae attack.

How to prevent a future algae attack:

Algae prevention is easy and economical with the Bionizer pool system. Follow these maintenance steps and you will spend more time swimming and less time working in your pool :

  • Check your Copper level weekly, and adjust the Ionising Time and/or Ionising Output of the Bionizer as needed, to keep a level of between 0.5 and 0.6 ppM Copper in the pool.
  • pH and Total Alkalinity are two of the most important pool parameters. Check them weekly and add acid and buffer as required. A pH Boss takes the time and guesswork out of pH, by measuring and controlling pH constantly whenever your pool pump is running.

Cloudy water is generally an indication that the water is out of balance. high pH, high Total Alkalinity and/or deficient Calcium Hardness levels can produce conditions that cause cloudy water.

Solution:

  1. Test pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness and adjust to the recommended levels.
  2. A filter in need of backwashing/cleaning and/or other filter faults can also cause cloudy water.
  3. If the water remains cloudy after these checks then use a compatible flocculant such as Focus Water Polish Plus as the cloudiness will be dust or pollen particles that are not removed by an Oxidizer or are too small for your filter to capture.

If you are not using an Eco-Oxidizer or other oxidizing device in conjunction with the Bionizer, then it is likely the cloudiness is due to oils from then use of an oxidizer such as Hydrogen Peroxide or an Oxy Shock such as one that contains Potassium Mono-persulphate should clear the cloudiness. Alternatively some liquid chlorine may be used. as an oxidizer. See Super-chlorination on page 30 of your Bionizer Handbook.

pH Boss

There are a few possible causes for inaccurate pH readings:

pH Probe is dirty.

  1. Disconnect probe BNC connector from the pH BOSS, then unscrew probe from the pipe.
  2. Wipe the glass bulb with a soft tissue soaked with methylated spirits.
  3. Soak the tip of the probe in diluted Hydrochloric acid (for example, from your pH BOSS diluted acid drum).
  4. Rinse the pH Probe thoroughly in clean water.
  5. Screw probe back into pipe and re-connect probe BNC connector.

pH Probe needs to be re-calibrated.

  1. Clean pH Probe as per procedure above.
  2. Re-calibrate pH Probe as per details on pages 13 and 14 of the pH Boss Handbook.

Pool water is very pure and has low conductivity.

  1. Add one bag of pool salt per 50,000 Litres (13,000 Ga) of pool water.

Either your pH Probe is dirty or faulty, follow the cleaning instructions below, if the pH reading still cannot be callibrated then the probe may need replacing, contact Bionizer or purchase a new probe here.

pH Probe is dirty.

  1. Faulty pH Boss unit.

Contact Bionizer to arrange a return of the pH Boss unit for repair.

IF YOU NEED TO RETURN YOUR pH BOSS FOR SERVICE OR REPAIRS AT ANY TIME: Please us the manual dose function on page 12 of the pH Boss Handbook to does 1 litre of fresh water though the system before sending it back.

This will stop diluted acid leaking from the pump during transport which would damage your unit or the packaging, voiding warranty, and is also a safety hazard for our technicians.

Dose Setting is set too high.

Reduce the Dose Setting by one level as per details on pages 11 and 12 of the pH Boss Handbook and check in 2 days.

Short circuit in pH Probe BNC Plug or Socket.

  1. Disconnect pH Probe plug from socket.
  2. Dry out with a hair dryer or allow to air dry.
  3. Reconnect and re-check.
  4. If problem persists, contact Bionizer, you may need to return your pH Probe to have connector replaced, or replace the pH probe.

Glass bulb or internal stem of pH Probe is cracked.

Replace pH Probe, a new probe can be purchased online here

  1. Check that the pH BOSS diluted acid drum is not empty.
  2. Check that all suction and output hoses are fitted correctly, with no leakage.
  3. Check that squeeze tube inside pump is not leaking.

WARNING: IF ANY DILUTED ACID HAS LEAKED OUT OF HOSES, WASH DOWN THE AREA WITH FRESH WATER IMMEDIATELY. TAKE THE LID OFF THE PUMP, REMOVE SQUEEZE TUBE AND WASH OUT WITH FRESH WATER IF SQUEEZE TUBE WAS LEAKING.

Leaking or worn squeeze tube and/or rollers.

  1. Tighten Acid Pump fittings further or replace fittings
  2. Replace squeeze tube and/or rollers as needed, see page 15 of the pH Boss Handbook

To replace fittings purchase an Acid Feeder Kit Here.

Eco-Oxidizer PRO

No / Low Water Flow.

Oxidizing stops and units beeps. Normal operation resumes when flow is restored.

When using a multi-speed pump, increase its speed. Ideal flow rate ranges are:

  • ECO-OXIDIZER PRO 30. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 66 to 220 L/min
  • ECO-OXIDIZER PRO 45. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 135 to 380 L/min
  • ECO-OXIDIZER PRO 60. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 166 to 500 L/min
  • ECO-OXIDIZER PRO 120. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 200 to 600 L/min
  • ECO-OXIDIZER PRO 250. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 250 to 750 L/min
  • Ensure that all valves are open and filter multiport valve is in normal filtration position.
  • Faulty flow switch or flow switch connection. See page 19 of your handbook for details on replacing the Oxidizing Cell or return for repair.

Low Salinity Warning. Oxidizing will continue, but unit must be set to lower setting.

  • The Low Salinity Warning level for each Output level setting is:
    • 100% Output : <1200 ppM TDS
    • 75% Output : <800 ppM TDS
    • 50% Output : <500 ppM TDS
    • 25% Output : <200 ppM TDS
  • Check Salinity level and increase to the 2000 to 3500 ppM range if needed as soon as possible to prevent damage to the Oxidizing cell plates.

  • If Salinity is in correct range, then clean the Oxidizing cell, as per page 18 of your handbook.

  • If the Oxidizing cell has been cleaned, then it will need to be replaced. Order a replacement cell and fit as per the information on page 19 of your handbook.

NOTE: When the cell life drops to below 30% remaining, the low salt alarm is disabled, since low readings may be due to cell wear, not low salt. Check Salinity level monthly.

Oxdising Cell Fault. Oxidizing function is disabled.

  • Oxidizing cell is not totally full of water. Check pump flow rate and any valves, to ensure flow rate is high enough to completely fill the cell.
  • Salinity level is below 250ppM, which can be due to filling a pool with fresh water and not yet having added salt. Add sufficient salt for at least 2000ppM Salinity.
  • If the Oxidizing cell has been replaced, there may be a connection issue. Double check all steps of the Oxidizing cell replacement procedure.
  • The cell has exceeded its maximum life. Replace the Oxidizing Cell as per the information on page 19 of your handbook.

Low Water Temperature (below 10ºC). Oxidizing continues, this is just a warning of low temperature.

  • If the temperature will be below 10ºC for extended periods (i.e. not just an overnight minimum), set the Eco-Oxidizer Pro to its lowest setting or consider switching it off entirely.
  • If the low temperature reading is an error, it is likely that the temperature sensor is faulty. Replace the Oxidizing Cell as per page 19 of your handbook or return the unit for repair.

High Water Temperature (above 45ºC) Oxidizing stops.

  • Pool water temperature above 40ºC are not permitted by law, so this must be rectified immediately. Oxidizing will resume as soon as the water temperature drops below 45ºC again.
  • If the high temperature reading is an error, it is likely that the temperature sensor is faulty. Replace the Oxidizing Cell as per page 19 of your handbook or return the unit for repair.

Faulty Temperature Sensor Oxidizing function is disabled, warning beeper sounds.

  • Check that the temperature sensor is connected correctly. The temperature sensor is the two-way header highlighted in the Oxidizing Cell replacement instructions on page 20.
  • If the temperature sensor is connected correctly, it is likely that the temperature sensor is faulty. Replace the Oxidizing Cell as per page 19 or return the unit for repair.

If the pool water becomes cloudy at any time we suggest testing the various pool balance levels and re-balancing the pool water according to the Pool Balance information in the Snap Balance Chart.

To depend on the Eco-Oxidizer Pro to remove the cloudiness and restore clarity before testing the water balance levels is asking the Oxidizing unit to fix a problem that only has one solution. Correct water balance and efficient filtering with a clean filter will restore clarity… if this does not clarify the pool water then it is most likely requiring more oxidation.

To put it more simply… if the filter is operating normally, with no heavy bather load upsetting the water clarity, then any cloudy or hazy appearance in the water is most likely due to the pool water being unbalanced.

If correct pool balance has been confirmed and your Bionizer equipment is running correctly, you can increase the Output level and/or Cycle Time to provide more Oxidizing power and a low level of Chlorine. See page 5 of your handbook. This will then help oxidize the compounds that are causing the cloudiness.

Eco-Oxidizer

When the Oxidizing function is switched On and the pool pump is running, the Eco-Oxidizer will oxidize your pool at the highest level that it can, depending on your pool balance. The LEDs will indicate to what level the unit is oxidizing:

If the LEDs indicate an oxidizing level anywhere from 3 to Max, then the unit is operating normally and no user action is required.

Action in case only 1 or 2 LEDs are lit :

  1. Inspect the Oxidizing Pod. The metal plates should be a dull black colour. If there is visible coating (for example white or grey calcification), then the plates need to be cleaned. See page 12 of your Bionizer Handbook for cleaning instructions.
  2. Check the TDS of the pool water. You may need to take a sample of your pool water to a professional pool shop to obtain this measurement. The Eco-Oxidizer only requires 1,000 ppM of TDS to operate correctly. If the TDS measurement is lower than this, add 2 bags of pool salt per 50,000L (13,000Ga) to the pool.

If neither of the above restore the LEDs to the normal output range, then contact Bionizer directly for further instructions.

NOTE: Outputs from 3 to Max LEDs are normal for low salt operation. If your unit is displaying 3 to 5 LEDs and you would like to obtain “Max” output, then you may add 2 bags of pool salt per 50,000L (13,000Ga) to the pool.

Magnesium based mineral salts are compatible the Eco-Oxidizer system.

This fault usually means the electrical path inside the system isn’t set up correctly.

  1. Check that the Eco-Oxidizer output cable is attached to either side of the pod, not both to the same side (see diagrams below).
  2. Check inside the pod, if the electrodes inside pod are touching, replace pod.

If neither of these issues are occurring their could be a Fault with the Eco-Oxidizer main unit. Contact Bionizer for further instructions for repair.

General Tips

  1. It is important to spend a few minutes a week to monitor the water balance and to learn the trends of the pool.
  2. After a couple of weeks a clear pattern will be identified as to how many hours and at what current control levels the ioniser should function.
  3. Do not haphazardly alter the pH, or add algaecide, or try to alter perfectly clear water. Give the pool water time to stabilise and remember simplicity is the key.
  4. Always keep the pH, Phosphates, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Copper Ion levels at the correct levels. See the Snap Pool Balance Chart.
  5. Brush the pool or operate your auto pool cleaner once a week and your pool water will settle down into a healthy sparkling body of water.

2 Tests Each Week

Test every week (adjust if required):

  1. pH . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7.0 – 7.4 pH
  2. Copper . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.5 – 0.6 ppM

3 Tests Each Month

(If weather/conditions are very wet/windy then do these 3 tests weekly)

Total Alkalinity. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 80 – 120 ppM Phosphates (Algae Food) . . . . . . . . . . . . . < 500 ppB Calcium Hardness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 200 – 250 ppM

Correct phosphate levels are as important as correct pH levels and are easily controlled by using Bionizer PFP™ Phosphate remover. When levels of phosphates are above 500ppB in the pool water there is a risk of algae as phosphates are food for algae.

Follow these rules and check your Bionizer regularly to ensure it is operating correctly and the anodes are not worn. Do these simple steps and we promise your pool will be the source of joy it was meant to be.

Using a Bionizer to manage and control your pool or spa rewards you with sparkling and healthy water which is a pleasure to swim or spa in.

Proper circulation of the pool water is vital to the health of the swimming pool water and to the prevention of algae. Long periods of time between filtering can give surface introduced algae time to protect itself with a wax coating thus resisting the copper and infesting the pool.

We strongly recommend filtering to a minimum amount per day to keep the water in a healthy condition. It is not about ‘filtration’. It is about ‘circulation’. A Bionized pool can be circulated/filtered to bare minimum time periods.

You may have poor circulation if:

  • Debris doesn’t make it to the skimmer and instead sits in corners.

  • Water looks cloudy in random areas.

  • Algae showing up in the same places over and over.

  • You cannot see gentle surface movement across most of the pool.

How to improve circulation:

  1. Angle return jets slightly down and all in the same direction.

  2. Clean the skimmer baskets and pump basket weekly.

  3. Backwash or clean the filter. A dirty filter works harder and moves less water.

  4. Use a robotic pool cleaner or brush the walls and floor once per week.

  5. Add a return or move eyeballs if you’ve got dead spots.

Let your eyesight be the guide to whether the pool water is clean and healthy.

Water Stress – Prevention Better than Cure

As algae can diminish the copper levels in water it is important to use the Boost function of the Bionizer (page 18 of your Bionizer Handbook) to compensate for periods of heavy rain, wind and/or abnormal pool load (i.e. lots of bodies in the pool all day). Use the Boost function if the Copper Ion levels fall to 0.3ppM or less due to any of these factors. These conditions rapidly increase the amount of algae spores that would normally find their way into your pool. By doing this before or soon after the rain/wind/extra load is experienced you are prepared for any increased loading on your pool. This action will exponentially reduce the chance of an algal attack stemming from these conditions.

Don’t Neglect Your Filter

The filter’s primary responsibility is to remove fine suspended debris from the water. If it is not maintained properly, cloudy water will be a constant problem.

  • Sand filters should have their media/sand replaced every two or three years. Use Glass Filter medium for swimming pool sand filters, as it is an excellent fine micron media that will only require replacing every 6 to 8 years.
  • When replacing the medium in the filter make sure that all of the old medium is completely removed from the filter. Up ending the filter and hosing out is one way to ensure this. This is important! Take care not to damage any laterals or seals inside the filter if changing filter medium.
  • We don’t recommend D.E. filters as the medium can double the number of anodes required for efficient operation. And who needs the expense and hassle of an “old school” D.E. filter anyway?
  • For Cartridge Filters clean cartridges regularly and inspect for holes or wear. Regardless of the filter type, damaged or missing gaskets or any incorrectly fitted parts can be responsible for cloudy water. Many water quality complaints are finally traced to the pool’s filter.

Remember Water Balance

Proper water balance is necessary for water health, clarity and also water hue. Maintain the pool water as outlined in the Start-Up section. We recommend the addition of a “pH Boss” to your pool. pH problems and troublesome testing now disappear. We also recommend the addition of an “Eco-Oxidizer” to reduce the need to chemical oxidizers and help maintain overall water balance and clarity.

Skim the Surface

Use a surface skimmer net to collect all floating debris. A leaf net works best for this particular task. This task can be greatly minimized with a properly functioning pool filtration system with adequate flow and a properly functioning skimmer weir. This inexpensive device increases the velocity of the surface water into the skimmer; thereby ensuring its ability to remove surface material from the pool, keeping it crystal clear. It acts as a one-way street allowing debris in but not out. This device is often underestimated. Installing one greatly reduces the amount of time required to clean the pool properly and keep it clean.
