Bionizer vs Traditional Chlorinators

Same clean pool. Completely different experience.

Every pool needs sanitising. But how you get there makes all the difference, to your skin, your maintenance routine, your equipment, and your wallet. Here’s how the Bionizer Complete Freshwater System stacks up against traditional chlorine-based pool care.

The short version

Traditional chlorinators keep algae and bacteria under control by continuously dosing your water with chlorine, whether that’s manually added, generated by a salt cell, or dispensed through a mineral system with a chlorine backup. It works, but it comes with a trade-off: strong smell, dried-out skin and hair, sore eyes, bleached swimwear, and a ton of pool corrosion.

Bionizer takes a different path. It combines copper and silver ionisation, low-level oxidation, and automatic pH control to sanitise and clarify your water using a fraction of the chemicals a normal pool needs — without asking you to compromise on water clarity.

Why the difference is so big

Traditional chlorine relies on volume.

A standard chlorine pool needs a constant, relatively high concentration of chlorine in the water to keep bacteria and algae at bay. That’s what causes the sharp smell, the red eyes, and the dry, tight feeling on your skin after a swim. Bionizer’s Freshwater System, by comparison, runs at just 5–10% of the chlorine level of a regular pool, less than what’s in ordinary tap water, because ionisation is already doing the heavy lifting on algae and bacteria control. The result is water that still stays clear, without the sensory trade-offs.

Salt chlorinators still make chlorine on-site.

A salt system doesn’t remove chlorine from the equation. It manufactures it electrolytically from dissolved salt, meaning you’re still swimming in a chlorinated pool, plus dealing with the cost of salt, the corrosion risk salt poses to pool fittings, heaters, and equipment, and the slippery water feel that comes with high salinity. Bionizer systems use up to 75% less salt than a standard salt chlorinator, saving most owners $100–$200 a year, while avoiding the same corrosion exposure.

Mineral systems only solve half the problem.

Many mineral pool systems still lean on a chlorine (or bromine) top-up to manage organic waste, because minerals alone don’t oxidise the sweat, oils, and sunscreen swimmers bring into the water. Bionizer closes that gap with a dedicated oxidation stage; the Eco-Oxidizer PRO. So the system doesn’t need to fall back on chlorine to keep water looking clear.

pH control is manual everywhere else.

Unbalanced pH is one of the biggest hidden drivers of algae growth, cloudy water, and equipment wear, yet most systems, including most “automatic” ones, still rely on you testing and manually dosing acid. The Bionizer pH BOSS is a genuinely automatic pH controller: it constantly monitors pH and makes small, precise adjustments in real time while the pump runs. No acid dumping, no guesswork.

Yes! That’s the part people are usually most skeptical of, and the part that surprises them most.

The Bionizer pool sanitizer system works perfectly for sparkling clear, clean water without need for excessive chemicals.Coupled with the Oxidiser and pH Boss modules, it has really reduced my maintenance time! The water feels beautiful to swim in too. Best of all, the customer service from the Bionizer team is the best I have ever experienced with great communication and quick responses.

We had a Bionizer System on our pool in Bali and now have one on our pool on the Sunshine Coast. The kids love it and can swim all day with eyes open underwater without any irritation. Getting out of the pool there is no need for a shower to rinse off chlorine or other chemicals, its virtually like getting straight out of the shower. Absolutely everybody comments positively about the water clarity and quality in out pool. The pH Boss means when I go away working the pool virtually looks after itself. I highly recommend.

Bioniser is a great, low maintenance pool system. Their after sales service is extremely good. My pool has been crystal clear for nearly 2 years now without needing chlorine or algicide, despite multiple flooding rains in our area. On the two occasions I’ve needed advice it was given same day and solved my issue. I cannot fault either the product or the customer service and am very happy with both.

We've had a bioniser pool (converted from a chlorine pool) for a few months. It was a great decision to make. The pool water is crystal clear and doesn''t stink of chemicals. It is important to ensure the pool is chemically balanced. When I get the pool water tested at the pool shop I'm not walking out with loads of chemicals to be added. We changed the filter media from sand to glass when the bioniser system was installed and it made a massive difference to filtration efficiency. The Bioniser team are friendly, helpful and really care for their product. A special thanks to Gary and Randell.

I don't do reviews often but these guys have been exceptional in their support. Buying the system is a no brainer given how much money and time is saved not having to constantly buy salt and chemicals but the service at this company in this day and age amazes me. It is obvious the people at this company care about people and are not just trying to sell a product.

I bought the whole system. When I make the effort and check the levels, I never have any problems. The guys at Bionizer are ALWAYS happy to help and the customer service is top notch. In Mildura I have had to learn to do everything myself as the local pool people did not understand that a pool worked without chlorine, but I have shown them that this is false. My daughters skin used to react to the chlorine, her hair would break, and we would all get sore eyes. NO MORE! If the idea of a pool that has no chlorine in it, is sparkling clear and gets the occasional duck swimming in it (Yes, that really happens) then get a Bionizer and don't look back.

The best decision we have made for our pool. No more dry, itchy skin. Easy to maintain and and crystal clear water. We went for the full kit, Bionizer, PH Boss and Eco-Oxidizer and have never looked back. Highly recommended.

The Bionizer really does keep the water in our swim spa clean and clear! It can sit for a few weeks over winter without needing a dose of anything, and when the spa has had heavy use it really reduces the need to use chemicals often.

Bionizer systems are used in backyard pools, public pools, resorts, and health facilities, and are backed by 26 years of real-world freshwater pool experience.

Why hasn't your pool shop mentioned this?

It’s a fair question. Many pool shops build their business around chemical sales; chlorine, salt, stabiliser, algicide. A system that dramatically cuts chemical consumption cuts into that revenue. Some technicians are also simply less familiar with freshwater ionisation systems, though that’s changing fast as more pool owners make the switch.

What it costs to switch

You don’t need to drain your pool to convert. Chlorine dissipates within days; salt gradually washes out through rain and backwashing. Either way, the Bionizer system installs on your existing filtration setup (including concrete, fibreglass, and vinyl pools).

Ongoing costs are low and predictable:

  • No regular chlorine or stabiliser purchases
  • Up to 75% less salt than a standard salt system
  • Minimal power draw
  • Main ongoing cost: replacing the copper/silver anodes every 2-3 years, and the Eco-Oxidizer cell roughly every 5+ years

Backed by an industry-leading 5-year warranty and a 90-day money-back guarantee.

The bottom line

Chlorine and salt systems sanitise your pool by keeping a constant chemical load in the water. Bionizer sanitises it by combining ionisation, targeted oxidation, and automatic pH balance, so you get the same clear result with a fraction of the chemical exposure, less maintenance, and water that actually feels good to swim in.
